Creative Mentorship
Scrappy, real-world practice for students and recent grads of UX and design programs who want portfolio proof, client confidence, and a path to paid work and independence.
Do you feel like school didn’t prepare you for the realities of real-life work? Especially design work. You’re not alone. It’s complex, and more competitive than ever. I designed this program, because I wish it was what I had access to when I finished school.
Rejection emails can stack up fast. I’ve seen even senior designers cycle through 6–12 months of searching. So let’s use this time wisely and build the kind of proof and confidence that job boards can’t hand you. You get to create your own internship. It’s up to you if you want to get paid and charge for your services.
Let’s build real portfolio proof, and practice landing clients. After a few video sessions, and uncovering personal goals and interests, we’ll venture into the real world on a series of field trips where you’ll experiment, build confidence, and practice talking with and pitching potential clients. Not only will I be your emotional support animal, and metaphorical hand holder, you’ll learn how to spot real business needs, propose realistic deliverables, leadership skills and turn those conversations into strong, real-world case studies (and possibly even paid work), guided step-by-step by a mentor who’s a former teacher and entrepreneur, and who has a lot of fun doing this. And the great thing is, you can do this package all over again if you enjoy it and feel like your learning. (You will)
What you’ll walk away with:
Portfolio work that looks like real-world experience (because it is)
Confidence talking about your work (without freezing, rambling, or apologizing)
Many ways to generate opportunities without rely on job boards
Hands-on support while you practice client conversations and follow-through
Skills in areas you didn’t get in formal school weather you were missing graphic, UX, marketing, leadership, business or _______________.
Some valuable real life stories.
An ongoing relationship and someone that can vouch for you
You’ll learn how to:
Develop leadership skills (scope, clarity, follow-through)
Develop internal emotional and social skills to cope with the reality of the working world and prevent burnout or workplace trauma.
Learn how to advocate for your needs, time and peace of mind.
Develop schmoozing skills (in a way that’s ethical and feels like you)
Roleplay conversations: discovery calls, pricing, pushback, awkward questions
Price your work when you feel ready to charge
Track time and deliverables, invoice, and keep it clean and simple
Practice “fake it until you make it” in an ethical way
Learn the marketing, web, and graphic design skills many UX jobs expect now (even when it’s annoying)
Leverage AI to speed up your design process (research synthesis, drafting, variants, critique, workflows)
Attend non-designer networking events (quiet advantage—yes, it’s a secret)
